Toys
I just rewatched this movie for the first time since it
first came out. I don't remember much about it at the age of 10, and my parents
may have even turned it off in shock and confusion "This is NOT a kids movie" they would say.
No it wasn't. Now at age 41, I can see this wasn't
necessarily a kids movie, and it's almost impossible to categorise it at all. I
think that's where it's power and magic lie.
What director Barry Levinson and star Robin Williams
succeeded in, was taking their world of imagination, surrealism and obscurity,
and mould it into a visually beautiful movie that transports you into it's
world.
Sure, it has it's issues with consistency and continuity,
but you can't deny the opening scene perfectly captures that sense of awe,
wonder, innocence and playfulness that is exclusive to being a child. Somehow,
Robin Williams never lost that touch, and took it to his grave.
You couldn't imagine this film without him, and we'll never
see another film like this ever again. And for those points, I choose to like
it.
