Ricky Stanicky

Return to List

 Ricky Stanicky

Who knew John Cena could act, do action and be funny? As former wrestlers continued to make the leap from the wrestling cage to the silver screen, the results have been mixed.

Obviously Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has probably had the most success financially, and has mixed it up with action and laughs, doing a good job for the most part. But when John Cena started to have a crack, I watched with curiosity, but wasn’t rushing out to see his movies. When he showed up in the Fast and Furious saga, I was intrigued and thought he did a reasonably good job. When the trailer for the Farrelly Brothers new comedy “Ricky Stanicky” went online, I was amused and curious. Maybe he could pull this off?

Screening exclusively to Prime, the film tells the story of 3 life-long buddies, lead by Zac Efron, who made up a fictional friend as kids, to cover for them when they got in trouble. And the hoax paid off, as men in their thirties now, they continue to use the mysterious enigma of their friend Ricky to get out of work, spending time with their partners and baby showers. But then, the questions start to be asked, and the people in their life want to meet this Ricky Stanicky.

So, the guys hire an actor, Rod (played by Cena) to step into the shoes, and he takes it very seriously, relying on all his “acting” skills to pull it off. Suddenly, Rod, who has struggled all his life with success and money, has a purpose and is not ready to give up the gig he was offered. In fact, he takes it so much in his stride he ends up getting offered a job, and charming the pants off of everyone. How much longer can the guys keep this long, elaborate lie going for?

This was a good comedy. It was a mix of banter between boys, toilet humour, sexual inuendo and observational humour. Everything you would expect from the filmmakers behind "Dumb and Dumber", "There’s Something about Mary" and "Me, Myself and Irene." Although not as physically gross as some of those films, it's got some clever jokes and funny situations, and there is a message and a lot of heart to this film.

John Cena is the main attraction here, and I’m happy to say he pulls it off with good comedic timing and showing more of his range. If he continues to find good scripts that balance action with comedy and a good story, he could continue to surprise us or a long time to come.
