Kung Fu Panda 4
I had never seen the first three Kung Fu Panda movies, but I
didn’t believe that would impact me much. The title of the film tells you
everything you need to know, and being an animated movie aimed squarely at
kids, you can expect laughs all the way.
The story this time focuses on Po (voiced brilliantly by
Jack Black), who is a well-established martial arts expert, having beaten each
of the villains that came before him. His mentor tells him its time to find a
successor to take over, as Po will be reassigned. He is hesitant to do this,
but understands it’s his natural path. Just before he fulfills his destiny, a
new villain emerges, who can take on the form of anything it wants to, and has
plans to bring back all of Po’s former enemies, steal their power and take over
the world.
Along for the ride this time is a new character in Zhen
(voiced by Awkwafina), and they don’t get along. They’ll have to work together,
and learn to trust one another in order to fulfil their mission.
The story is simple enough, and I had a great time watching
this in theatres with my daughters, aged 5 and 8. They got a laugh out of many
scenes, and the highlight has to be in a city, where the police force are
bulls, and all of them chase Po and Zhen through the streets. It’s ridiculously
over the top, but well done, and the animation is seamless and perfect, and
moves so quickly, you will be blown away by the beauty of it all.
Seeing Kung Fu Panda 4 reminds me of how far animated movies
have come, since the likes of Toy Story started it all. Then Shrek took it to a
new level, and the whole sub-genre has exploded. Seeing a film like this
reminds you of all the other fun animated movies out there, and let’s face it –
they’re all fun, and cleverly mix jokes for kids and adults alike, with stories
that speak to every age and generation. A great film to watch with your family,
as you’ll be entertained from start to finish.
